ROSIE'S SERVICE CORPS

Rosie's Service Corps (RSC), a program of the Rosie the Riveter Trust in partnership with the Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park, embodies the values of Service, Connection, and Power. Inspired by Rosie the Riveter’s “We Can Do It” attitude, RSC engages youth in leadership, career development and community service, as inspiration for what they can do in the future, to enhance their awareness of Richmond's rich WWII history and to positively contribute to their communities.

SERVICE

RSC emphasizes service!

RSC emphasizes service as a key component, allowing youth to learn about Richmond's historical significance while improving neighborhoods and honing new workplace skills. Former participants highlighted community service as crucial for maintaining connections to peers and the larger community. 

CONNECTION

The program fosters connections to history, place, and peers.

Participants reported that RSC helped them socialize, build relationships, and feel a sense of belonging, which contributes to their overall well-being and resilience. Learning about Rosie the Riveter’s legacy has been particularly impactful, inspiring participants with stories of overcoming discrimination and empowering them to apply these lessons in their lives.

POWER

RSC instills a sense of power through the development of Power Skills, Power Tools, and Personal Power!

These include trade introduction, gender and cultural awareness, leadership, communication, advocacy, and financial literacy. Participants gained skills such as team building, patience, and critical thinking, and noted an improvement in their social-emotional skills. 

 

The program provides hands-on skills training, boosting confidence and opening career opportunities in trades and non-traditional fields. Participants have created tangible items like chairs and tables, fostering a sense of capability. 

 

RSC encourages confronting fears and taking risks, building confidence and personal agency. Through hands-on projects and social skills development, participants reflect on and embody new concepts and perspectives, supporting each other’s growth.

 

 

PROJECTS

ROSIE'S TOOLBOX

A curriculum for educators introducing students to Rosie the Riveter and WWII Home Front history, fostering an interest in trades. 

CAREER PREPAREDNESS PROGRAM

An enrichment class at Sylvester Greenwood Academy High School focusing on workforce development, resume writing, and mock interviews. It includes career fairs and field trips to broaden career perspectives, including the trades, outdoor careers and healthy risk-taking to build personal power.

SUMMER PROGRAM

A summertime experience for rising 8th and 9th graders, featuring trade skills development, community service, STEAM activities and field trips

 THE HUB

A youth-led, staff-mentored project continuing the development of Power Skills, Power Tools, and Personal Power. It offers a safe space for ongoing learning and workplace skill development.
