Keep Us Flying Magnet
The Tuskegee Airmen overcame segregation and
prejudice to become one of the most highly respected
fighter groups of World War II. Their achievements,
together with the men and women who supported them,
paved the way for full integration of the U.S. military.
While some were pilots, others served as operators,
medical personnel, quartermasters, parachute riggers,
mechanics, bombardiers, navigators, meteorologists,
control tower operators, dispatchers, and cooks. The
pilots were educated at Tuskegee University [formerly
Tuskegee Institute] and trained at three different airfields
Moton, Kennedy, and Tuskegee Army Air Field collectively
known as the Tuskegee Airfields in Tuskegee, Alabama.
Tuskegee Airmen were nicknamed “Red Tails” and “Red
Tails Angels,” and their motto was “Spit fire!”
